In this issue of Philosophy and Community we talked to Hermílio Santos, a sociologist at the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio Grande do Sul, who films some outstanding documentaries. Hermilo’s documentaries are inspired by the methodology of interpretative sociology in the works of Alfred Schütz, rooted also in philosophy – you can watch the teaser of a documentary by Hermilio on Schütz here. Maps have been among the most widespread visual tools since the early modern ages when a new understanding of space and the limits of the world started reshaping our minds. For those who would never have the chance to travel, maps made distances more tangible; for those travelling, ever more accurate maps made survival more likely; and eventually, those making or commissioning maps had the chance to become political agents. In this issue, I’ll present two examples of how the digital humanities have transformed how we access scholarly information and enjoy world heritage. read more

This 2023, we showcased the work of many excellent young scholars. Continuing with this tradition, here is Claire Murphy. Claire graduated from Thomas Aquinas College (US) in 2020 with a BA in Liberal Arts. Currently, she is a PhD student in the Program in History and Philosophy of Science at the University of Notre Dame. Her dissertation will focus on scientific representation, engaging with the contemporary philosophy of science literature while drawing on historical case studies. read more
