Claire Murphy

This 2023, we showcased the work of many excellent young scholars. Continuing with this tradition, here is Claire Murphy. Claire graduated from Thomas Aquinas College (US) in 2020 with a BA in Liberal Arts. Currently, she is a PhD student in the Program in History and Philosophy of Science at the University of Notre Dame. Her dissertation will focus on scientific representation, engaging with the contemporary philosophy of science literature while drawing on historical case studies. In particular, Claire is interested in the relationship between scientific models (especially highly idealized ones) and their real-world targets, and how these models engage our imaginations and provide knowledge about the world in spite of – and even, sometimes because of – these idealizations. In line with the above, Claire maintains a strong interest in the history of natural philosophy (especially in the Aristotelian tradition and broader medieval period), as well as aesthetics and the philosophy of art, drawing on these resources in her work in the philosophy of science. She is also a Fellow at the History of Philosophy Forum at Notre Dame, where she helps with hosting visitors and planning events that foster collaboration among scholars in the history-of-philosophy community, reaching across the boundaries of time periods and disciplinary methodologies.
