César Reigosa Soler
For November, we are happy to take you to the ‘Land of Tulips’ to introduce you to César Reigosa Soler. César is a Postdoctoral Researcher at the University of Groningen (The Netherlands), where he recently completed his PhD (2024) with a dissertation titled ‘Future Truth, Foreknowledge, Prophecy and Glossolalia: Some Puzzles Concerning Future Contingents in Ancient and Medieval Philosophy’ – supervised by Tamer Nawar and Emar Maier. Before this, César received an MA by Research from the same institution and a BA in Philosophy from the University of Havana (Cuba) – in 2018 and 2014, respectively.
In his research, César deals with problems concerning future contingents, especially how medieval thinkers revised their logic, semantics, and views of cognition in response to them. His paper ‘Ockham on the Puzzle of Prophecy and Future Contingency’ just came out in the Journal of the History of Philosophy (2024). Here, César looks into Ockham’s treatment of a puzzle concerning whether the future can be both contingent and revealed through prophecy. He maintains that Ockham’s two responses to the puzzle are more plausible and more closely related than is typically thought. The paper’s main argument is that Ockham relies upon a canonical distinction between ‘forecasts’ and ‘forewarnings’ to develop a semantics of ‘prophecies of choice’ aimed at reconciling prophecy and future contingency. César’s interests, however, extend beyond medieval philosophy, including a variety of topics within Ancient philosophy, contemporary metaphysics, philosophy of language, philosophy of mind and philosophy of action.
