Ordem do Mérito do Pensamento Brasileiro – Medalha António Paim
The Director of the Institute of Philosophy and Professor in the Department of Philosophy, José Francisco Meirinhos, was honoured by the Brazilian Academy of Philosophy with the “Order of Merit of Brazilian Thought – António Paim Medal”, awarded “for his contribution to the development and strengthening of Brazilian thought”. The corresponding medal and diploma were awarded at the Brazilian Academy of Philosophy, Rio de Janeiro, in a ceremony that took place on 18 October 2023. Info
Book Prize – Stephen Ogden
Stephen Ogden, Tracey Family Associate Professor of Philosophy in University of Notre Dame, won the annual book prize from the Journal of the History of Philosophy. The book awarded is Averroes on Intellect (OUP, 2022). Info
2023 Founder’s Award Competition
2023 Founder’s Award Competition for best paper by a young scholar from the Society of Medieval and Renaissance Philosophy was given to Colin Murtha (Radboud University, Netherlands). This year’s winner with a paper titled “A Stratified World, Avicenna’s Theory of the Sublunary Strata”. He will be presenting the paper at an upcoming session sponsored by the SMRP. In addition, honorable mentions include: Alvaro Bo (University College Dublin), “Metaphysics, Methods, and Certainty of Mathematics”; Seth Kreeger (Marquette University), “Being and Essence”; Samuel Pell (University of Notre Dame), “Thomas Aquinas on the Development of Definitional Cognitions”.
2022 Journal of Medieval Iberian Studies Best Article Prize
Maria Joana Gomes, researcher at the Philosophy Institute of the University of Porto (Portugal) won the 2022 JMIS Best Article Prize Winner for a study co-authored with researcher Francesco Renzi: Maria Joana Gomes & Francesco Renzi, “Miro, King of the Suevi (d. 583), and ecclesiastical identities in northwestern Hispania (eleventh-twelfth centuries)”, Journal of Medieval Iberian Studies, 14.3 (2022) 399-423, available for consultation.
