The Aristoteles Latinus project is a cornerstone in the field of medieval studies, dedicated to the critical edition of all medieval Greek-Latin translations of Aristotle. Overseen by the International Union of Academies, this project plays a pivotal role in understanding the various forms in which Aristotle’s texts were read and utilized in the West during the Middle Ages. The Latin translations of these texts were essential tools for the study of science and philosophy, forming the canonized foundation upon which all commentary on Aristotle’s work was based.

Among many student initiatives between the University of Vienna and Central European University in the area of philosophy, art history, philology, and history in general, I met Ivan, an art historian originally from Serbia. His interests in architecture, art, and archaeology on one hand and mine in philosophy, philology, and theology on the other sparked numerous discussions in a truly interdisciplinary manner. For this occasion, in vernal Vienna, I am interested in Ivan’s view on philosophy, especially considering his research regarding Neoplatonists, from the perspective of history of art and archaeology and how philosophy is intertwined with and expressed in art and material aesthetics.

Digital Libraries are now a common thing. Almost every major Public Library has at least part of its collections digitised. Efforts and standards for digital preservation and accessibility have been decades now. Nevertheless, it’s incredible how much is still to be done. Countless fonds are waiting in line for their turn, and the attack against the British Library has revealed how fragile the system can be. Accessing, using and writing about these digital fonds and their corpus is also a way of preserving heritage and transmitting knowledge about them. This month, we’ll briefly present some new digitisation projects that many scholars will surely welcome in the coming years.

For May, we cross the Atlantic all the way to America to introduce you to Abigail Whalen. Abigail got her BA in philosophy from the University of Notre Dame (US) in 2019, where she received the John A. Oesterle Award in Philosophy upon graduation. She then obtained a B.Phil. from the University of Oxford (UK) in 2021 as a Barry Scholar. Currently, Abigail is finishing her first year as a PhD student at Notre Dame, thanks to a Presidential Fellowship. Prior to her return to South Bend, she spent a year working in higher education in London.
